The NRI of a lesser god

The Good ol’ United States lured a lot of qualified Indian brains over the decades, and showed those wealth starved beings green bills with figures of 100 translating to thousands of our own money. This inspired more young minds, of the coming generations to sell their brains for a dollar instead of a rupee. Many years have past from that advent, and now I can safely say that almost everyone I know has someone or the other in the United States.
Every student has it in them (however they may deny it, and put on an act of national pride) to land up in the America of their dreams. The very epitome of success these days is related to making it big in America; mind it not anywhere else in the world.
It is when the word “America” stirs up so much awe to the average “born and brought up in India”, that an NRI is as good as a man can get.

This NRI is like that one time opportunity that people spring upon , following the evil little voices inside that say, “get some money”, “ get him to take you there” or sometimes “ your daughter stupid, get them married” The NRI apart, America is truly a country worth respecting, their governance and systems are perhaps the best in the world. Where they stand today is through the tireless effort of 200 years of independence.
But what is sickening is how we as a sovereign nation worship it for the success that we too should have achieved if it was not for our lethargy.

It’s irritating when people try to be “all American”, because they they’ve gone to the land of beer and chocolates (in comparison to the land of milk and honey!!!!!)Once, or even worse because they know some one that is there, and therefore are justified in pronouncing god as “gad”
About accents in this age of modern India, the American accent is the cool one, no not the British although they are the actual English but the American one filled with it’s gonna’s and wanna’s
The chocolates from or rather bought in America are the F****** best as some one I know told me, when I asked why he replied, “coz they re from America duh!!!!” making sure all appropriate slang words were used. Yet in all his knowledge the guy couldn’t read “made in Switzerland” or Swiss chocolate on the cover.

All that’s just the tip of the ice berg, what is really vexing is when abroad only means America, bringing me to what I intend to truly convey. For I and a class of so many NRI s are in the eyes of so many RI’s, people of a lesser god.
When we are asked where we come from our answers range from Saudi Arabia to Seychelles and to places never heard off and the only response we get is an “ is that in America?” when a no graces our mouths its an instantaneous “oh fine then” that graces theirs. We are a discriminated lot, looked down upon only because our residence isn’t the promised land of the Indian working class.

Our residences may not be countries of ultimate technology, yet they are beautiful and different in their own, our exposure to world culture is as sophisticated as any indo American, and they pay we receive is justification of our search for greener pastures in a land far away from home.
We need to be treated as our American fellow, or at least not disregarded in the light of his highness,

It is a cry for recognition, trivial though it may seem, its solution is one with bringing broad mindedness into a society as this. If we are to evolve into a country that other countries respect, we must learn to respect it ourselves.

In the spirit of a true Indian (resident or not)

Jai Hind.

Ps- Africa is not one country!!!!!
